HIV-1, HIV-2 can trigger an immune response. Testing for HIV antibodies in serum, plasma, or whole blood is the most effective and commonly used method for determining whether an individual has been exposed to HIV and for screening blood and blood products for HIV. Although HIV-1 and HIV-2 have differences in biological characteristics, serological activity and genome serialization, they all show strong antigenic cross-reactivity. Most HIV-2-positive sera can be identified using HIV-1-based serology tests.
